James Begent (c1796-1857) is believed to have been one of the son’s
of John and Abigail Begent nee Collar (their fourth known son was James
Bedgant christened at Sevington on 25th December 1796). James had married
Mary Hayman aka Harman at Saltwood on 30th October 1820 – witnessed
by a John Begent.

John Begent is believed to have been the widow of Abigail Begent
who had been buried at Hythe on 23 February 1833 when aged 78. John
died later in 1841 and was also buried at Hythe, on 31st December aged
87. The couple are believed to have been parents of William Begent c1785,
Elizabeth Begent 1790, John Begent c 1794, James Begent c 1796, Stephen
Begent 1800, and Thomas Begent c 1805. John and Abigail had married
in Hougham on 14th April 1776.

Stephen Begent is thought to be the son of John & Abigail Begent
who was christened ‘Stephen Begeant’ at Kennington near
Ashford on 24th January 1802. Later censuses and his burial records
suggest Stephen had been born in 1800. His wife may be the Sarah Taylor
who the IGI shows marrying a Stephen Begent at Folkestone on 26th May
1826. Baby Charlotte was to die in 1845 aged 4 after which a new sister
was given the same name.

John Begent (1821-1861) was the eldest son of James (shoemaker)
and Mary Begent (nee Harman alias Hayman). He had married Margery Hogben
(1820-1895) at Elham on 25th March 1842. John was to die in Dover shortly
before the 1861 Census. Jane Elizabeth Begent, an elder sister to Mary
Louisa Begent, had died from measles aged 4 in October 1847 and was
buried at Acrise.
